Tuesday tidbits from Senior Bowl practice

Posted Jan 21, 2014

Tuesday in Mobile, Alabama at Senior Bowl practice had a few unique stories.

Tuesday in Mobile saw the North squad practice at Ladd-Peeples Stadium from 9:30-11:30 am, and the South followed suit from 1:30-3:30 in the afternoon. Temperatures were in the 50's with a whipping wind out of the north. Below are a few tidbits about the day of work.

-After wearing a plain white helmet at Monday's South practice in Fairhope, Tulane wide receiver Ryan Grant (6-1, 191) had his Green Wave equipment on for Tuesday.

"My equipment didn't get here on time, but my coaches were available to drive me an extra set of shoulder pads and an extra helmet," Grant said.

He was thankful New Orleans is a "convenient" two-hour drive away. Grant played his high school ball in Beaumont at West Brook High School, and as a senior in 2013 with Tulane, he led the squad with 77 catches for 1,039 yards and nine touchdowns.

-Wyoming's Marqueston Huff (6-0, 195) played free safety in 2013, and was a corner the three years before that. He's playing at both positions in practice this week, and he also took part in the East-West Shring game last week.

Although it was chillier on Tuesday in south Alabama, Huff is one who was not affected by the colder weather.

"Just going out everyday in Laramie, Wyoming...it's a cold place," Huff said. "I'm a Texas boy originally, so my freshman year was kind of a struggle, just getting through the brutal cold. But at the end of the day it made me stronger. It made me mentally tough, and it made me the guy I am today, and I'm very appreciative of that place."

Huff hails from Texarkana, Texas, where he played in high school at Liberty-Eylau.

-UCLA inside linebacker Jordan Zumwalt (6-4, 235) finished the morning practice with the North squad, and had blood above his left eyebrow. He also wore a smile, and explained that the troublespot on his forehead is something he's used to.

"My junior year, I got in a car crash with my scooter," Zumwalt said. "A lady pulled in front of me and I hit her and I cut my head up pretty good. It was the middle of the season, so I didn't get a chance to heal because my helmet kept cutting it. As time goes on, the scar healed over real thin. So my helmet just cuts it. It'll heal up perfectly, but my helmet will just cut it."

Zumwalt was the co-MVP of the Sun Bowl, as his Bruins beat Virginia Tech in El Paso.

Also, even though his alma mater's rival is the University of Southern California, he said Texans' linebacker Brian Cushing is one of his favorite players. Zumwalt's even wearing number 56 in honor of Cushing.
