Texans raise more than $270k for charity at Taste of Texans

Posted Nov 6, 2012

The Texans raised more than $270,000 for charity at the fourth-annual Taste of the Texans presented by BP on Monday night at Reliant Stadium.

More than 750 Texans fans had a chance to wine and dine with Texans players, Lady Texans, the Houston Texans Cheerleaders, TORO and Texans Ambassadors at the fourth-annual Taste of the Texans presented by BP on Monday night at Reliant Stadium.

The event, which sold out more than a month in advance, raised more than $270,000 to help the Houston Texans Foundation underwrite hunger-relief programs of the Houston Food Bank, the largest source of food for hunger relief charities in 18 southeast Texas counties, and support patient care, education and research programs at The Methodist Hospital.

“It’s for an unbelievable cause,” Texans center Chris Myers said. “Everything benefiting Methodist Hospital and the Houston Food Bank and the Texans Foundation really means a lot. Raising over $200,000, it’s a great event to partake in and be able to get here with the sponsors and the fans and get personal with them. It’s pretty nice.”

The entire Texans rookie class, including first-round draft pick linebacker Whitney Mercilus, wide receivers Keshawn Martin and DeVier Posey and former University of Houston quarterback Case Keenum, were in attendance. Veteran starters such as Myers, wide receiver Kevin Walter and tight end Owen Daniels were among 13 other players on hand.

Nearly 30 of the top restaurants in Houston were on hand to serve some of their signature dishes, including Underbelly, Del Frisco’s, RDG Bar Annie, Sullivan’s, The Oceanaire, III Forks Steakhouse, Max’s Wine Dive, RA Sushi, El Tiempo Cantina, Pappa’s Bros. Steakhouse and Sprinkles Cupcakes.

“I’m excited to be here,” Walter said. “Obviously, the food is unbelievable, too. I’ve been here a few years, so it’s fun.”
