Postgame notebook: Foster's feat, Schaub's top rating

Posted Oct 23, 2011

Running back Arian Foster accomplished a rare feat in the Texans' dominant 41-7 victory over the Titans at LP Field.

NASHVILLE - Notes from the Texans' Week 7 victory over the Tennessee Titans at LP Field.

Manning injured
Free safety Danieal Manning suffered a potentially serious leg injury in the second quarter on Sunday. Read all about it here.

Foster’s feat
With 115 rushing yards and 119 receiving yards, running back Arian Foster became the first player in Texans history and 32nd player in NFL history with 100 yards rushing and receiving in the same game.

He’s the eighth player to accomplish the feat in the last 10 years, and the first since Titans running back Chris Johnson did it on Nov. 15, 2009, against the Buffalo Bills.

“It wasn’t just me,” Foster said. “It was a collective effort. Our line did a great job. Matt (Schaub) was putting the ball on point.  It’s what you sign up for. When you get the ball in your hands you try to take advantage of the situation and make plays.”

Foster had averaged only 3.2 yards per carry in the previous two games. The scary thing is, he might be getting even better now that his early-season hamstring injury is well behind him.

“I didn’t go through training camp, so I still don’t feel like I’m in football shape,” Foster said. “I mean, I’m in good shape, but it’s tough when you don’t go through training camp… I think that’s what you need as a football player, and I’m just starting to get back to my football shape.”

Top rating
Quarterback Matt Schaub had a 147.7 passer rating, the highest of his career. His previous high was 144.0 on Oct. 26, 2008, against Cincinnati.

Schaub was 18-of-23 for 296 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. With Andre Johnson out for the third consecutive game, he completed passes to seven different receivers. He wasn’t sacked and was hit only twice after taking a pounding in the last two weeks.

More O.D.
Tight end Owen Daniels had four catches for 71 yards, second on the team to Foster in both categories on Sunday. He has 18 catches for 242 yards in the last four games, of which Johnson has played less than two quarters because of a hamstring injury.

“We found some ways to get him in space and get him some mismatches,” Schaub said. “They were doing a good job at certain points of doubling him. Teams are obviously aware of where he is at this point with Andre not being in there. He is a go-to guy for us. There were some occasions where we got one-on-one coverage, and we were able to take advantage of them.”

Daniels is on pace for 62 catches and 811 yards this season. That would be the most since his 70-catch, 862-yard Pro Bowl season in 2008.

Interception streak
The Texans picked off Matt Hasselbeck twice on Sunday, marking the sixth consecutive game in which they’ve recorded an interception.

Manning intercepted Hasselbeck in the second quarter on a deep throw over the middle. The Texans capitalized with a 78-yard touchdown drive. Cornerback Brice McCain picked off Hasselbeck in the fourth quarter and returned it for a 38-yard touchdown.

The Texans have scored 59 points off turnovers this season. They had 63 points off turnovers all of last season.

Special teams shuffling
Neil Rackers handled kickoff duties for the entire game for the first time this season. Rookie punter Brett “The Hitman” Hartmann had been kicking off until Rackers took over the role during last week’s game at the Ravens.

Two of Rackers’ seven kickoffs on Sunday went for touchbacks. The Titans averaged only 20.6 yards on the five that were returned. Rackers laid out Marc Mariani with a jarring hit in the third quarter, adding to his total as the NFL’s all-time leader among kickers in special teams tackles.

Wide receiver Trindon Holliday made his NFL debut as the Texans’ kick returner, although he only had one punt return for zero yards and one fair catch. Two other punts went out of bounds, and one went into the end zone for a touchback. The Titans kicked off only twice, and both kicks went for touchbacks.

Rookie safety Shiloh Keo made a solo tackle on the Texans’ first kickoff. He was promoted to the active roster last week to replace safety Dominique Barber, a key special teams player who was placed on injured reserve with a foot injury.
