National Media Poll: Who will the Texans draft?

Posted Feb 26, 2014

At the NFL Scouting Combine, HoustonTexans.com polled members of the national media about the Texans No. 1 draft pick.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, HoustonTexans.com polled members of the national media about the Texans No. 1 draft pick.

We asked two questions:
1. Who should the Texans draft with the first pick?
2. Who would you draft with the first pick?

Here were the results:

1. The Texans pick

Bortles – 50%
Manziel – 12.5%
Clowney – 12.5%
Undecided – 25%

2. The expert pick

Manziel – 37.5%
Bortles – 25%
Clowney – 25%
Undecided – 12.5%

NFL Network’s analyst Daniel Jeremiah was the only one polled who expected Houston to draft South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. After an impressive Combine running a 4.53 40-yard dash, Jeremiah said he would take Clowney too.

Pat Kirwan, NFL insider for CBSSports.com, endorsed a quarterback with the first pick. Kirwan felt Bortles was simply a better fit in the Texans offense as did former NFL quarterback and Sirius radio analyst Jim Miller.

ESPN’s John Clayton called this draft selection “a rough one” with three quarterbacks at the top of the draft board. While Bridgewater, Manziel, and Bortles are all good options, Clayton felt the best thing for the Texans would be to trade down a few spots. If the Texans kept their No. 1 spot, passing on a prospect like Clowney would be tough. If Houston took a quarterback with the first pick, it would be a toss-up between two prospects.

“They can work with Johnny being under 6 (feet), “ Clayton said. “It could slide over to (Teddy) Bridgewater who is more of a pocket passer. If it'll be a QB I think Manziel or Bridgewater.”

Adam Caplan, ESPN NFL Insider, predicted Houston to select an unnamed quarterback but if he was choosing, Clowney would be a Texan.

Peter King, of Sports Illustrated, wanted to keep Johnny Manziel in Texas.
“Houston has to pick a quarterback and I think if Manziel satisfied the off-field issues, he would probably be the guy I would pick,” King said.

That being said, King thinks Houston will take Bortles.

Alex Marvez, senior writer for FoxSports.com, predicted Houston to do what he would do. Draft Manziel.

For CBS.com’s Pete Prisco, the answer to both questions was Blake Bortles, the best quarterback in the draft.

Most writers were conflicted about who the Texans would take and if they would take a quarterback at all with the first-overall selection. Bortles seemed to be a logical choice for most with his head coach at Central Florida, George O'Leary, having coaching ties with Bill O'Brien and quarterbacks coach George Godsey.

As for the personal picks, media, of course, liked the buzz surrounding Johnny Manziel. To have the Heisman Trophy winner playing in his home state of Texas would simply add another layer of excitement for fans and media alike. Surprisingly, no one definitively picked Louisville's Bridgewater in either poll question.
