J.J. Watt draws praise from Packers

Posted Oct 14, 2012

Defensive end J.J. Watt was disappointed after the loss to Green Bay, but the Packers were impressed with him.

After a pair of sacks on Sunday night in the loss to Green Bay, defensive end J.J. Watt regained the NFL’s sack lead with nine. Throw in four tackles for loss and three quarterback hurries, and Watt filled in the stat sheet once again in 2012. But don’t try telling that to him.

“It was a bad game,” Watt said. “They are a great football team. You need to give them a ton of credit. They came in here and played their game.”

The 42-24 throttling by the Packers was the first loss of the season, but Watt quickly kept things in perspective in the locker room following the defeat.

“We are 5-1,” Watt said. “We are a very good football team. Tonight wasn’t our night. We are going to come back to practice this week, fix our mistakes, get it all corrected, and we will be just fine next week.”

Although Rodgers and the Packers torched the Texans for six touchdown passes, the reigning NFL MVP was complimentary of Watt.

“He’s a big time player in this league,” Rodgers said. “He has a chance to be Defensive Player of the Year for sure and be great in this league for a long time.”

Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy also spoke highly of Watt, a native of Pewaukee, Wisconin.

“J.J. has big days ahead of him,” McCarthy said. “Everybody is proud that he’s from Wisconsin, and we’ll root for him starting tomorrow. He’s an excellent player.”

For Watt and the Texans, that tomorrow starts on Monday, as the team begins preparing for their Week 7 Sunday matchup against quarterback Joe Flacco and the Ravens. Baltimore is also 5-1, and the winner on Sunday at Reliant Stadium will own the best record in the AFC.
