Posted Jan 29, 2014

The winner of the Houston Texans Coach of the Year Award, Gary Joseph of Katy High School, was named a finalist for the 2013 Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year award.

The winner of the Houston Texans Coach of the Year Award, Gary Joseph of Katy High School, was named a finalist for the 2013 Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year award. Out the 32 NFL teams who submit a nominee, Joseph was selected to be one of three finalists.

The Texans High School Coach of the Week program is a fully-integrated, grassroots program designed to aid and promote high school football throughout the Houston area. One winner is selected each week during the football season and receives prizes including a $1,000 check to go towards the school’s football program. Joseph was chosen as the Texans High School Coach of the Year Award winner after the Tigers finished with a15-1 record and a 5A Division-II State Championship appearance.

In addition to receiving a $3,000 grant from the Texans for his Coach of the Year selection, Joseph will receive a personal check for $2,500 and $5,000 for the Katy High School football program.

“It’s an honor for our school, administration and for our football team to be recognized by the Texans, and of course it’s a very humbling experience for me,” Joseph said. “It’s not just about me, it’s about our staff and the community and everything that goes into making Katy football. For that, I’m really pleased with the honor.”

The Don Shula Award winner, who will be named on Jan. 31, receives $10,000 and his High School football program is awarded $15,000. He also wins an all-expense paid trip to Super Bowl XLVIII in New York.  Additionally, two Shula Coach of the Year finalists will receive $2,500 while $5,000 grants will be awarded to their high school football programs.
