All-Pro Andre Johnson talks O'Brien, Manziel, more

Posted Feb 12, 2014

Texans receiver Andre Johnson spoke on Wednesday about the Texans' new head coach Bill O'Brien and some other topics.

In addition to chatting about his upcoming charity golf tournament, Andre Johnson also spent some time Wednesday morning talking football.

The Texans wide receiver said he’s had a “short conversation” with new head coach Bill O’Brien, and he left impressed.

“He seems like a great guy,” Johnson said. “He seems like he really loves the game of football. He’s very passionate about it. He’s all about ‘team’. I think all those characteristics are great.”

After a 2013 season in which he finished with 109 catches for 1,409 yards, Johnson was selected to his seventh Pro Bowl. He didn’t play in the annual all-star contest, however because of a wrist injury. But Johnson said he’s “fine”, health-wise, and missed the Pro Bowl because he “didn’t want to go back out there and bang it anymore.”

The football conversation also meandered to the NFL Draft, and the All-Pro wideout was asked about his impressions of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel.

“I think he’s a great player,” Johnson said. “I’ve had a chance to meet him. He seems like a good kid. Very into football. He’s an exciting player to watch. I enjoyed watching him in college. He doesn’t have the name ‘Johnny Football’ for nothing.”

Johnson will be honored by his alma mater on April 10, as he’ll be inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.

“Just like playing in the NFL, I wanted to be a Miami Hurricane,” Johnson said. “When I signed up for this game, I didn’t think about being inducted into the Hall of Fame or anything like that. I just loved playing the game of football.  To have that happen, it’s a tremendous honor. Especially to be in there with some of the great players that have played there before.”
