To The World's Best Fans:
Due to feedback about the roof policy, the Houston Texans organization has worked with leading meteorologists and other weather experts to understand how air temperature, humidity, wind and sun light combine to create the actual in-seat environment and fan comfort level in Reliant Stadium on game day. We are working hard to create an atmosphere that allows our fans to enjoy their experience and show their support for the team. The decision to open or close the roof each game is a very difficult one to make because our goal is to maximize the comfort of all of our fans and there are significant differences in temperature within the stadium depending upon where you are seated (sun or shade).
Based on our own work with weather experts and other research conducted, we have learned that direct sunlight adds 15 degrees to the heat index and the high temperature. Therefore, if the high temperature is 83 degrees and it is sunny, the actual gameday temperature for the sun-exposed seating areas within Reliant Stadium would be 98 degrees. With no breeze and direct sunlight, this creates a very uncomfortable environment for the thousands of our fans seated in the sun. These fans often retreat to the concourse areas of the stadium after only a few minutes of sun exposure to avoid the risk of sunburn and other more serious heat and sun-related conditions. Our No. 1 concern off of the football field is the safety and comfort of our fans and therefore we have established a clear roof policy (see below) that allows us to provide the most appropriate game day environment for all of our fans.
A significant amount of research and consideration went into our roof policy and we are working hard to make good decisions regarding the roof for each game. We even have a research team who sits in the seats each game week to determine the comfort level our fans will experience in various areas of the stadium. We will continue to do our homework to better understand the dynamics in this area so that we can provide you with the very best game experience available anywhere.
We appreciate your continued support. If you have any feedback concerning the roof policy, please click here.
NOTE: Our 50/80 rule is a guideline to help our fans prepare for gameday. We make the roof decision on a case-by-case basis each game by considering numerous factors, including the 50/80 rule, and we choose the position (open/closed) that we feel will provide the best environment for our team to play and our fans to enjoy the game.
Houston Texans Roof Policy (50/80 rule):
We will consider opening the roof at Reliant Stadium when the game time temperature is projected to be between 50 and 80 degrees. Our goal for implementing the “50-80 Rule” is to provide the most comfortable environment possible to enjoy Houston Texans games. Please note that the threat of rain will influence this decision, and when there is a good chance of rain during a game, the roof will be closed. Also, our parameters for late afternoon and evening games may shift slightly because of the absence of direct sunlight. However, we plan to use the general parameters established with your input to make the roof position decision for each game.
Our research clearly demonstrated that we cannot please everyone, every time with our roof position decision. However, we are hopeful that this note helps to point out that our approach is thoughtful, deliberate and focused on creating the best environment possible for the majority of our fans to enjoy games at Reliant Stadium.
